Stamp Act - issued as an attempt to pay off bills from war - issued in March 1765 - same idea originally used in England - stamp was bought in order to prove that one paid the tax on any paper goods - if one was caught without a stamp they would be fine and/or jailed and tried without jury in an admiralty court - colonists protested this act and demanded it repealed - many people refused to buy goods that needed a stamp - others thought this act was reasonable because it was supporting England and the Navy/Army (Ms. Vargas' class notes)

Declaratory Act - March 18, 1766 Parliament repealed the stamp act but issued the declaratory act - the declaratory act reinstated that Parliament can still make laws in the colonies at any time - because of the overwhelming protest Parliament gave in and repealed the stamp act - Parliament didn't want to seem weak so they issued the declaratory act to still be powerful - After Benjamin Franklin discussed the unfairness of the stamp act, Parliament agreed to repeal it http://worldhistoryproject.org/1766/3/18/the-declaratory-act
Townshend Acts - Charles Townshend needed to find another way to collect money from colonists - Benjamin Franklin said the colonists opposed internal taxes but would accept external taxes - Put taxes on imported lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea - These acts were quickly not liked by colonists - The acts also reorganized custom services - soldiers received one third of the proceeds when a seized - colonists again protested by refusing to by these taxed goods - Instated admiralty courts without juries http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h643.html Boorstin, Daniel, and Brooks Kelley. Intolerable Acts - series of acts issued in 1774 as Britain's response to the tea party - The Boston port act completely shut down Boston ports - Massachusetts could no longer democratically vote the governor's council, members would be appointed by the king - forbade town meetings - British soldiers could live for free in taverns or homes - Quebec act took colonists claims of what used to be part of the French empire as an attempt to organize it - Soldiers accused of crimes would be tried in Britain not in the colonies http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/worldwar1/p/jutland.htm
